Exploring movement differences in knee osteoarthritis and after knee replacement
Quantifying the Movement Dynamics of Adults Living With Total Knee Arthroplasty and Knee Osteoarthritis
This study looks at how walking and movement are different in people with knee osteoarthritis, those who have had knee replacement surgery, and healthy individuals to see how these differences affect their ability to exercise and stay active.

What this trial studies
This research investigates the differences in walking and functional movement mechanics among individuals with knee osteoarthritis, those who have undergone total knee replacement, and healthy individuals. It aims to understand how these differences affect exercise response and physical activity levels. The study will analyze the impact of pain, stiffness, and joint instability on physical activity, as well as the potential reasons why joint replacement may not lead to improved activity levels. Findings from this observational study could inform future interventions to enhance clinical outcomes and quality of life for affected individuals.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals diagnosed with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis who can walk without assistance for at least 10 minutes.
Not a fit: Patients who are unable to walk at a speed of 0.8 m/s or have neurological conditions or other musculoskeletal issues may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved interventions that enhance physical activity and quality of life for patients with knee osteoarthritis and those recovering from knee replacement.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited evidence on the specific movement dynamics post-joint replacement, similar studies have explored physical activity levels in osteoarthritis patients, indicating a need for further investigation in this area.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Diagnosed symptomatic bilateral or unilateral knee osteoarthritis, self-reported ability to walk without an aid for 10 minutes and to ascend and descend stairs, no neurological conditions or other musculoskeletal pathology/injury which would impact walking gait. Exclusion Criteria: * Unable to walk at 0.8 m/s, exclusion based on IMO screening, non-English speaking, lacking ability to consent.
