What this trial studies
This observational study aims to understand the reasons behind pediatric day of surgery cancellations by conducting qualitative interviews with parents of affected children. The study will involve 20-30 families, focusing on those from minority racial and ethnic backgrounds and non-English primary language speakers, with interviews facilitated by interpreters. Utilizing the Gelberg-Anderson Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations, the research will explore themes such as parental knowledge, community resources, and access to surgical services. The findings will inform interventions to improve hospital pre-operative procedures and reduce cancellations.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are parents or guardians of children under 18 who have experienced a day of surgery cancellation.
Not a fit: Patients whose guardians speak languages other than English, Spanish, Somali, Nepali, or Arabic may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved surgical scheduling and reduced cancellations, enhancing patient care for vulnerable populations.
How similar studies have performed: While similar qualitative studies have been conducted, this specific focus on pediatric day of surgery cancellations and the use of the Gelberg-Anderson model is relatively novel.
