What this trial studies
This observational project uses structured questionnaires to characterize firearm ownership, storage, accessibility, and safety practices among caregivers of pediatric surgical patients. Caregivers will complete brief standardized surveys about whether firearms are present in the home, how they are stored, who has access, and what safety education they have received. Responses will be collected from consenting parents or legal guardians presenting for any surgery or procedure at Nationwide Children's Hospital and analyzed to identify common practices, concerns, and education gaps. The goal is to generate data that can guide targeted safety education and injury-prevention efforts.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are parents or legal guardians of children presenting to Nationwide Children's Hospital for any surgery or procedure who are willing to complete the questionnaire.
Not a fit: People who are not the child's legal guardian or parent, or who are not presenting at Nationwide Children's Hospital for a child's procedure, are not eligible and will not benefit directly from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the results could help the hospital design targeted safety education and interventions to promote safer firearm storage and reduce children's access and injury risk.
How similar studies have performed: Previous caregiver and community surveys have successfully identified storage gaps and informed effective safe-storage education and policy interventions.
