What this trial studies

Forty women with PCOS, class I obesity, and bilateral dry eye will be assigned to two groups of 20. Both groups will receive metformin three times daily and follow a low-calorie diet for 12 weeks. One group will additionally perform one hour of treadmill walking three times per week for 12 weeks. Eye dryness symptoms and clinical measures will be monitored over the study period to compare outcomes between the groups.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Women with PCOS who have class I obesity and bilateral dry eye and who can safely exercise and take metformin are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Women with significant liver, cardiac, or renal disease, those who are not obese or do not have dry eye, or who cannot exercise safely are unlikely to benefit from this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, adding regular walking to diet and metformin could reduce dry eye symptoms and improve weight and metabolic health in these women.

How similar studies have performed: Lifestyle changes and metformin have shown benefits for metabolic and reproductive outcomes in PCOS in prior studies, but their specific effect on eye dryness has been little studied.
