Examining how sensory integration affects attention in autism

How the Simultaneous or Delayed Presentation of Visual and Auditory Stimuli Affects Response Accuracy and Reaction Times in Participants With Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) During an Association Task.

Observational Istituto per la Ricerca e l'Innovazione Biomedica · NCT06872229

What this trial studies

This study investigates the impact of sensory integration on attention in individuals with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) by comparing their performance on visual-auditory tasks to that of neurotypical individuals. Participants will be exposed to two modes of stimulus presentation: simultaneous and separate, to assess how these conditions affect accuracy and reaction time. The goal is to determine whether sensory overlap increases cognitive load and decreases performance, while separate presentation may enhance processing abilities in those with ASC.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder who have a cognitive index score of 80 or higher.

Not a fit: Patients with significant hearing or visual impairments, other medical disorders, or a history of psychiatric diagnosis may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved strategies for enhancing cognitive performance in individuals with autism.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on sensory processing in autism, this specific approach of comparing simultaneous versus separate stimulus presentation is relatively novel.
