What this trial studies
This study investigates the impact of a virtual, community-based music mindfulness program on stress management among People of African Descent (PADs) experiencing anxiety and depression during COVID-19. It aims to address the lack of culturally relevant mental health interventions for marginalized groups by incorporating music as a supportive tool for meditation and mindfulness. Participants will engage in communal drumming and listen to different types of music while their stress levels are assessed through surveys. The study seeks to provide preliminary data on the effectiveness of these community programs as adjuncts to standard care.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals aged 16 and older from the PAD community who are experiencing anxiety and depression.
Not a fit: Patients under the age of 15 or those with contraindications to functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy or Electroencephalography may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a culturally relevant approach to reducing stress and improving mental health outcomes for PADs.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with music-based interventions for stress management, but this approach specifically targeting PADs is relatively novel.
