Evaluating kidney function and muscle health after critical care
Assessment of Kidney Function and Osteomuscular Status in Survivors of a Prolonged Stay in Intensive Care Unit
University of Liege · NCT04980092

What this trial studies
This observational study assesses kidney function in ICU survivors by measuring glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using iohexol clearance and comparing it to estimated GFR from creatinine and cystatin C equations. It also evaluates muscle and bone health through clinical testing, muscle strength measurements, body composition analysis via electrical bioimpedance, and bone mass assessment using dual-energy radiographic absorptiometry. The study aims to understand the evolution of kidney function and the impact of critical illness on muscle and bone health over a one-year follow-up period.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients who have survived an ICU stay of at least 7 days and experienced acute kidney injury during their stay.
Not a fit: Patients with chronic kidney injury prior to ICU admission or those with kidney transplants will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved monitoring and management of kidney and muscle health in ICU survivors.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown the importance of assessing kidney function and muscle health in ICU survivors, indicating that this approach is relevant and potentially beneficial.
