What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the impact of smoking on early postoperative respiratory symptoms, such as cough and wheezing, in adult patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery. Participants will be categorized into smokers and non-smokers, and the study will assess the incidence of minor pulmonary complications within the first 24 hours post-surgery. Data will be collected on various respiratory parameters, including secretion volume and oxygen saturation, to determine the association between smoking and early pulmonary events. The findings aim to enhance understanding of the subtle respiratory effects of smoking in the postoperative setting.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18-60 undergoing elective abdominal surgery who are classified as either active smokers or non-smokers.

Not a fit: Patients with chronic pulmonary diseases, recent respiratory infections, or those undergoing emergency surgery may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved postoperative care and management strategies for smokers undergoing surgery.

How similar studies have performed: While many studies have focused on major postoperative complications, this study's focus on early minor pulmonary events in relation to smoking is relatively novel.
