What this trial studies
This randomized trial evaluates the effectiveness of endoscopic ultrasonography-guided celiac plexus block (EUS-CPB) in reducing abdominal pain for patients suffering from chronic pancreatitis. The procedure involves injecting a combination of a steroid and a local anesthetic into the celiac plexus to alleviate pain, which is a significant complication of the disease. Participants will be compared against a sham procedure to assess the true efficacy of EUS-CPB. The study aims to provide insights into pain management strategies for chronic pancreatitis patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18 and older with chronic pancreatitis and persistent abdominal pain lasting at least three months.
Not a fit: Patients under 18, those with a history of prior EUS-CPB, or those with contraindications to the procedure will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve pain management and quality of life for patients with chronic pancreatitis.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promising results with EUS-CPB for pain relief in chronic pancreatitis, indicating that this approach is supported by existing evidence.
