What this trial studies
This randomized controlled trial evaluates the impact of postprandial ambulation on infant birth weight among pregnant individuals diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Participants will be divided into two groups: one receiving counseling to walk for 20 minutes after meals, and the other receiving standard exercise recommendations. The primary outcome measured will be the birth weight percentile for gestational age at delivery, while secondary outcomes will assess feasibility, need for medication, delivery mode, and neonatal hypoglycemia. Activity will be monitored using Bluetooth-enabled pedometers to ensure adherence to the intervention.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are pregnant individuals diagnosed with gestational diabetes who are fluent in English or Spanish.
Not a fit: Patients with pre-existing diabetes or those unable to ambulate due to physical limitations will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved birth outcomes for infants of mothers with gestational diabetes.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that lifestyle interventions, including physical activity, can positively impact outcomes in gestational diabetes, suggesting this approach may be effective.
