What this trial studies
This intervention aims to decrease childhood obesity among Yup'ik Alaska Native preschoolers by promoting healthy eating and physical activity. The program involves a multi-level, randomized, stepped-wedge approach that integrates traditional foods and outdoor activities into the daily routines of children aged 3-5 years. It collaborates with Head Start programs across 12 rural Alaskan communities, focusing on family engagement, school-based interventions, and community resources to enhance outdoor play. The initiative seeks to establish lifelong healthy habits and address cardiometabolic disparities in this Indigenous population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this program are Alaska Native preschoolers aged 3-5 years enrolled in participating Head Start programs.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have a parent who identifies as Alaska Native or who lack parental consent will not benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly reduce obesity rates and improve overall health outcomes for Alaska Native preschoolers.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown success in similar community-based interventions targeting childhood obesity, particularly in Indigenous populations.
