What this trial studies
This project aims to refine and test a culturally-tailored smoking cessation intervention specifically designed for American Indian women who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Utilizing a community-based participatory approach, the study will develop intervention materials and methodologies that are trauma-informed and culturally relevant. Participants will engage in an 8-week program called Healing Within, during which their feasibility, acceptability, satisfaction, and preliminary efficacy will be assessed, alongside changes in alcohol and drug use. Data will be collected through interviews at baseline, end-of-treatment, and three months post-treatment.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are American Indian women aged 18 and older from the Northern Plains who smoke at least five cigarettes per day and have experienced IPV in the past three months.
Not a fit: Patients who are not American Indian, do not meet the smoking criteria, or are pregnant may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly reduce smoking rates and improve overall health outcomes for American Indian women who have experienced IPV.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been health interventions for IPV-related issues, this culturally-tailored smoking cessation approach is novel and has not been previously tested.
