What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the impact of vegetarian versus non-vegetarian diets on the recurrence of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in patients with cirrhosis. It focuses on patients who have recently recovered from an episode of HE, assessing how different protein sources may influence their health outcomes. The study will enroll participants from the outpatient department of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where their dietary habits will be monitored and analyzed. The goal is to determine if a vegetable-based diet can help prevent future episodes of HE compared to an animal-based diet.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older with a confirmed diagnosis of liver cirrhosis who have recently recovered from an episode of hepatic encephalopathy.

Not a fit: Patients with severe cardiopulmonary disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, or a CTP score of more than 12 may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide dietary recommendations that help reduce the recurrence of hepatic encephalopathy in cirrhosis patients.

How similar studies have performed: While dietary interventions in hepatic encephalopathy have been suggested in case reports, this specific comparison of vegetarian versus non-vegetarian diets is novel and has not been extensively tested.
