Combining personal HPV story videos with informational vaccine animations to boost teen vaccination
"Facts Tell… and With Stories Sell?" Combining Viewer-tailored Personal HPV Narrative Video With HPV Vaccine Information Video to Improve HPV Vaccine Uptake
We will test whether personal HPV story videos, informational HPV vaccine videos, or both together best help parents of 11–17-year-olds who haven't received the HPV vaccine decide to vaccinate.

What this trial studies
Parents of unvaccinated 11–17-year-olds are randomized to view either an informational animation, a personal narrative video, or both, and complete surveys before and after viewing. The study measures changes in vaccine intentions and short-term self-reported uptake after exposure to the videos. Videos are delivered and viewed on participants' own devices, and completion of the survey and video viewing are required for inclusion. The trial is run by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with data-collection support from Ipsos and collaboration from Merck Sharp & Dohme.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are parents or legal guardians of 11–17-year-old adolescents who have not yet received any HPV vaccine doses and can view videos on their device.
Not a fit: Parents whose adolescents are already vaccinated or who cannot or will not view videos on their device are unlikely to benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the approach could increase HPV vaccine uptake by identifying which video format most motivates parents to vaccinate their teens.
How similar studies have performed: Prior research shows mixed but promising results for narrative and informational messaging separately, while combining tailored personal narratives with information is less well tested.
