What this trial studies

This study is a two-arm, parallel-group randomized controlled trial aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of integrated financial and smoking cessation counseling for low-income smokers. A total of 900 participants will be recruited and randomly assigned to either receive standard smoking cessation counseling or the integrated approach, which includes financial coaching. Both groups will receive 8 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy, and outcomes will be assessed through surveys and biochemical verification of smoking abstinence at 12 months. The study also aims to compare the costs associated with each treatment arm.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are low-income smokers aged 18 and older who smoke at least 5 cigarettes per day and are interested in receiving both smoking and financial counseling.

Not a fit: Patients with medical contraindications to nicotine replacement therapy or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve smoking cessation rates among low-income individuals by addressing financial barriers.

How similar studies have performed: While integrated approaches to smoking cessation are being explored, this specific combination of financial and smoking cessation counseling is relatively novel.
