ChatGPT-supported problem-based learning to build physiotherapy clinical reasoning

Effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence Based Educational Approach in Developing Clinical Reasoning Skills in Physiotherapy Students

NA · Medipol University · NCT07010991

What this trial studies

At Medipol University, 2nd- and 3rd-year undergraduate physiotherapy students will be assigned to either a ChatGPT-supported problem-based learning (PBL) module or a traditional low back pain education program. The AI-supported arm uses ChatGPT to generate case prompts, offer feedback, and personalize learning during interactive PBL sessions while the control arm follows standard instructional methods. Outcomes measured before and after the intervention include theoretical knowledge tests, structured clinical decision-making assessments, and learner attitudes toward interactive AI learning. Results from both groups will be compared to determine differences in skills and satisfaction.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are volunteer 2nd- or 3rd-year undergraduate physiotherapy students at Medipol University who can attend scheduled sessions.

Not a fit: Students who have already completed clinical problem-solving training (4th-year students), those unable to attend sessions on time, or non-undergraduate learners are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could produce physiotherapists with stronger clinical decision-making and patient-care skills, potentially improving future patient outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Prior medical education studies using ChatGPT and other large language models have reported improvements in knowledge and learner satisfaction, but similar evidence specifically in physiotherapy education is limited.
