What this trial studies

Young adult females with primary dysmenorrhea who report a pain VAS ≥4 for the past three consecutive menstrual cycles and have regular menses will be enrolled. Participants will consume a beverage containing chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and L-theanine while researchers record menstrual symptoms, pain intensity (VAS), mood, and sleep quality. Key exclusions include pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, psychological or gynecological illnesses, secondary dysmenorrhea, current medication use, or ongoing non-pharmacological dysmenorrhea management. The intervention is administered and outcomes are collected at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman in Kampar, Perak, Malaysia.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Young adult women with primary dysmenorrhea, regular monthly periods, a pain VAS of ≥4 for the past three cycles, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and not using medications or other dysmenorrhea therapies.

Not a fit: Those with secondary dysmenorrhea, current medication or non-pharmacologic treatment for menstrual pain, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or relevant allergies are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the beverage could offer a low-risk, non-prescription option to reduce menstrual pain and improve mood and sleep for affected young women.

How similar studies have performed: Some small trials and traditional use suggest chamomile and L-theanine can improve sleep and anxiety and limited studies report chamomile may ease menstrual cramps, but large-scale rigorous evidence is still limited.
