What this trial studies
This clinical trial evaluates the effects of carbohydrate loading on diabetic type 2 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. Patients will be randomly assigned to receive either carbohydrate loading two hours before surgery or follow a standard fasting protocol. The study aims to assess the impact of carbohydrate loading on insulin resistance, clinical outcomes such as infection rates and ICU stay duration, and changes in inflammatory markers. By focusing on this specific population, the trial seeks to fill the knowledge gap regarding the efficacy of carbohydrate loading in diabetic patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are diabetic type 2 patients scheduled for isolated on-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.
Not a fit: Patients with type 1 diabetes or those undergoing other cardiac surgeries may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could improve recovery outcomes and reduce complications for diabetic patients undergoing heart surgery.
How similar studies have performed: While carbohydrate loading has shown benefits in non-diabetic patients, its efficacy in diabetic type 2 patients undergoing CABG is less understood, making this a novel investigation.
