What this trial studies

This is a randomized, online trial that will enroll 410 participants with self-reported anxiety and/or depressive symptoms and randomize them to one of three arms: the Big Five (Things You Do, TYD) intervention, an active Gratitude intervention, or a waitlist control. Intervention participants receive a short module plus daily SMS reminders (Monday–Friday for four weeks) prompting either the five daily actions or gratitude practices. The primary aim is to replicate findings from the original Australian trial by comparing TYD to the waitlist control, and a secondary aim is to compare TYD to the active Gratitude control. Collected data will also be used to examine psychometric properties of measures and the cross-cultural applicability of the intervention in a Norwegian context.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are people aged 16 or older who live in Norway, have a Norwegian national identity number, and report at least mild symptoms on the PHQ or GAD (score ≥5).

Not a fit: People with active suicidality (PHQ item 9 score ≥2), those who do not understand Norwegian or English, or those living outside Norway are not likely to benefit or be eligible for this trial.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this low-cost, scalable program could reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms by encouraging simple daily activities delivered remotely.

How similar studies have performed: A prior Australian trial of the Big Five (TYD) reported promising results linking the five actions to mental health improvements, but cross-cultural replication in Norway remains limited.
