Beetroot extract effects on blood pressure and muscle oxygen during exercise in older women with high blood pressure
Acute Effects of Beetroot Extract Supplementation on Blood Pressure, Oxidative Stress, and Muscle Oxygen Saturation in Hypertensive Older Women Submitted to an Aerobic Exercise Session
This trial will test whether a beetroot supplement taken before exercise lowers blood pressure and improves muscle oxygen levels in women aged 60 to 70 with high blood pressure.

What this trial studies
This randomized, double-blind crossover study gives each participant both a nitrate-rich beetroot extract and a matched placebo in random order, with aerobic exercise and rest sessions to compare acute responses. Eligible women (60–70 years) with hypertension who can safely perform the exercise will complete a single supervised aerobic session after each supplement condition. Investigators will measure blood pressure responses, oxidative stress markers, and muscle oxygen saturation using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to capture immediate physiological effects. The focus is on whether a single dose of dietary nitrate can blunt exercise-related cardiovascular stress and improve muscle oxygenation in this group.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Women aged 60 to 70 with diagnosed hypertension who can perform the required aerobic exercise and do not have other cardiovascular disease, current smoking, or alcohol abuse.
Not a fit: People with significant cardiovascular disease, current smokers, those with alcohol abuse, men, or adults outside the 60–70 age range are unlikely to get relevant results from this trial.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the supplement could reduce exercise-related blood pressure spikes and improve muscle oxygenation, making exercise safer and more comfortable for older women with hypertension.
How similar studies have performed: Prior trials in adults have often shown that dietary nitrate from beetroot lowers blood pressure and can aid exercise performance, but evidence specifically in older hypertensive women during exercise is limited and mixed.
