Assessing heart disease risk in kidney transplant patients using CT scans
Cardiovascular Risk Assessment For Kidney Transplantation - Utility of Computed Tomography Coronary Angiography in the Assessment of Patients Awaiting Kidney Transplantation
This study is testing if a special type of CT scan can help find out which kidney transplant patients are at higher risk for heart disease before their surgery.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) in identifying patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease before they undergo kidney transplantation. Cardiovascular disease is a leading complication for patients with kidney failure, and current assessment methods do not adequately identify those at greatest risk. By utilizing CTCA, the study seeks to improve risk stratification and potentially enhance patient outcomes following transplantation. The study will include patients aged 16 and over who are on the waitlist for a kidney transplant and able to provide informed consent.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 16 and over with kidney failure who are on the waitlist for a kidney transplant.
Not a fit: Patients with contraindications to CT scanning or those being considered for simultaneous multi-organ transplants may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better identification of high-risk patients, ultimately improving their outcomes after kidney transplantation.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that CTCA can effectively identify cardiovascular risk in patients with normal kidney function, suggesting potential for success in this population.
