Assessing breathing parameters to predict extubation in ICU patients

Assessment of Ventilation Parameters for Extubation Prediction in ICU

Observational Ankara University · NCT06531005

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the values of mechanical power, driving pressure, and elastic power to predict the duration of mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients experiencing acute respiratory failure. By analyzing these parameters, the study aims to identify which patients may be suitable for early extubation and which may require prolonged ventilation or alternative treatments like tracheostomy. The research is grounded in previous findings that link mechanical ventilation strategies to improved patient outcomes, particularly in preventing lung injury. The study will involve consenting patients who have recently been intubated for acute respiratory failure.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients who have recently been intubated due to acute respiratory failure.

Not a fit: Patients with lung cancer, those on ECMO, or those who are expected to die within 24 hours will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved decision-making regarding extubation timing, potentially reducing complications and enhancing recovery for ICU patients.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promising results in using mechanical ventilation parameters to improve patient outcomes, suggesting that this approach may be beneficial.
