Assessing biomarkers after surgery for oesophagogastric cancer
The LABS Study: Longitudinal Assessment of Biomarkers After Oesophagogastric Cancer Surgery (BIORESOURCE 2: Longitudinal)
This study is trying to find out if certain biological markers in patients who had surgery for oesophageal and gastric cancer can help predict how well they will respond to treatment and their chances of recovery.

What this trial studies
This observational study focuses on patients with oesophageal and gastric adenocarcinoma who have undergone surgery. It aims to collect matched biosamples during the follow-up period to identify biomarkers that could predict treatment response, recurrence, and long-term prognosis. The study builds on the existing BIORESOURCE 1 project, which has already established a comprehensive resource of samples from similar patients. By understanding the relationship between the cancer-specific microbiome and inflammation, the study seeks to enhance knowledge of cancer progression.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18-90 with biopsy-proven gastric or oesophageal adenocarcinoma who are part of the BIORESOURCE 1 cohort.
Not a fit: Patients with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma or those with a history of other cancers within the last five years may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved methods for predicting treatment outcomes and recurrence in patients with oesophagogastric cancer.
How similar studies have performed: While this study builds on previous research, the specific approach of longitudinal biomarker assessment in this context is relatively novel.
