Alcohol Use Disorder Before and After Bariatric Surgery and How Surgery Is Addressed During Addiction Follow-up
Alcohol Use Disorder Before and After Bariatric Surgery and the Impact of Considering This Surgery During Addiction Follow-up
This project will see how bariatric surgery and whether clinicians consider the surgery during addiction follow-up relate to alcohol use disorder outcomes in adults treated for AUD at two French centers.

What this trial studies
This observational chart-review uses medical records from adults treated for alcohol use disorder at the CSAPA of the University Hospital of Strasbourg and Saverne between January 1, 2003 and March 31, 2024. Investigators will identify patients who underwent bariatric surgery and extract information on timing of surgery, history of eating disorders, other substance use disorders, and documentation of the surgery in addiction follow-up. No interventions are performed; analyses will explore associations between bariatric surgery, changes in AUD course, and how the surgery was considered or managed during addiction care. The goal is to clarify patterns that could inform multidisciplinary follow-up practices.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (≥18) with a history of bariatric surgery who received addiction follow-up for alcohol use disorder at the CSAPA of the CHU de Strasbourg or Saverne during Jan 1, 2003–Mar 31, 2024 and who do not object to reuse of their data.
Not a fit: Patients without bariatric surgery, those treated outside the specified centers or timeframe, people under legal protection, or those who object to data reuse are unlikely to benefit from this analysis.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If patterns are identified, the findings could help addiction and surgical teams improve monitoring and tailor follow-up to reduce post-surgery alcohol-related problems.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have reported associations between bariatric surgery and later alcohol problems but results and mechanisms remain mixed, so this question is partly explored but not settled.
