What this trial studies

This research assesses the feasibility and acceptability of a brief self-help intervention designed to enhance motivation for smoking cessation among individuals recently diagnosed with specific types of cancer. The intervention is tailored to the type of cancer the patient has, aiming to provide personalized support. Participants will be compared to a control group receiving usual care to evaluate the effectiveness of the targeted approach. The study will involve individuals who smoke and have received a cancer diagnosis within the last six months.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adult smokers who have been diagnosed with breast, colorectal, gynecological, skin melanoma, or bladder cancer within the past six months.

Not a fit: Patients who are currently enrolled in a smoking cessation program or male patients diagnosed with breast cancer will not benefit from this study.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria:

* Individuals who smoke and recently (i.e., within 6 months) received a diagnosis of breast, colorectal, gynecological, skin melanoma, or bladder cancer (n = 20 per cancer type). (Investigators will consider smokers individuals who report having smoked ≥1 cigarette in the past 30 days.)
* Able to read/write English;
* Able to give informed consent;
* Not currently enrolled in a smoking cessation program;
* Age ≥18 years old.

Exclusion Criteria:

* Male patients diagnosed with breast cancer will be excluded as lifetime risk for breast cancer in men is far below 1%
