What this trial studies

This clinical trial aims to implement a Pain and Coordination Plan (PAC-plan) for patients discharged from the hospital after experiencing accidental injuries. The PAC-plan includes an opioid management strategy, a follow-up appointment with a general practitioner, and enhanced communication between hospital specialists and GPs. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the PAC-plan or usual care, and their health outcomes will be assessed through questionnaires at discharge and at 6 and 52 weeks post-discharge. The study seeks to determine if this approach can effectively reduce opioid use and improve quality of life for patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older who have undergone acute orthopedic surgery due to accidental injuries and are discharged on opioid medication.

Not a fit: Patients who are unable to read, speak, or write Norwegian, have severe cognitive impairments, are not discharged to home, or are currently undergoing cancer treatment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly decrease opioid dependency and enhance recovery quality for patients after injuries.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in similar approaches to opioid management, but this specific PAC-plan is a novel intervention.
