What this trial studies

The project adapts an evidence-based social-support intervention (Youth-Nominated Support Team) for youth on probation and implements a Type I hybrid effectiveness-implementation program on Long Island. After formative work and stakeholder-driven adaptation, a single-arm pilot (N≈40) will deliver YST-P through a community behavioral health agency. Outcomes include within-subject change in suicidal ideation and behaviors and comparison of treatment uptake (intake + one session) to a propensity-matched historical control, with exploration of mediators and moderators. Investigators will also measure implementation outcomes and multi-level contextual factors that affect uptake and sustainability.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are English-speaking youth aged 12–17 on probation who endorse suicidal ideation/behavior, have a willing caregiver, and can nominate 2–4 supportive adults with at least two willing to participate.

Not a fit: Youth who are not on probation, non-English speakers, lack a willing caregiver or supportive adults, or require higher-intensity inpatient care are unlikely to benefit from this outpatient support program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, YST-P could reduce suicidal ideation and behaviors and increase timely engagement in mental health services for probation-involved youth by leveraging their existing support networks.

How similar studies have performed: The original Youth-Nominated Support Team has shown benefits as an adjunct after psychiatric hospitalization, but adapting it specifically for youth on probation is novel and not previously tested.
