What this trial studies
A school-based intervention will be delivered to secondary school students in Hong Kong, with participating classes or schools receiving the youth-for-youth mental wellness program while control groups receive no additional treatment. The program targets flourishing, quality of life, depression, suicidal ideation, mental health literacy, help-seeking intention, and school climate through a mix of peer-led activities and school-wide initiatives. Outcome measures include psychological processes (mattering, emotion regulation, empowerment), social factors (trust, sense of community), stigma, and cost-effectiveness metrics such as the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER). Feasibility, acceptability, and sustainability will be examined from the perspectives of students, student leaders, and key stakeholders.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Students enrolled in Hong Kong secondary schools in Forms 1–3 who can read Chinese or English, speak Cantonese or English, and whose legal guardian and they provide written consent are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Students outside Forms 1–3, those with severe clinical needs requiring specialized care, or students unable to engage in the school-based, language-dependent program may not receive benefit.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could improve students' mental well-being, lower symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts, and foster a more supportive school environment.
How similar studies have performed: Prior school-based and peer-led mental health programs have shown modest improvements in knowledge, help-seeking, and wellbeing, but comprehensive youth-led models like this are less tested in Hong Kong.
