What factors affect daily function in chronic neck pain

Predictors of Functional Status in Chronic Non-Spesific Neck Pain

Observational Kutahya Health Sciences University · NCT07544108

This project will try to see if breathing strength, neck muscle function, and anxiety relate to how well adults (18–65) with chronic neck pain can do everyday activities.

What this trial studies

This observational, mixed-methods project will collect physical measurements and questionnaires from adults with non-specific chronic neck pain to identify factors linked to functional status. Measures will include neck muscle performance, motor control and proprioception, respiratory strength (maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressures), posture, and psychosocial scales for anxiety, stress, and pain-related fear. Data will be analyzed to determine which bodily and psychosocial factors are most strongly associated with neck-related disability. The goal is to create a more complete picture of contributors to disability in chronic neck pain to inform prevention and management.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18–65 with non-specific neck pain for at least 3 months who are literate, non-smokers, without lung disease, with BMI ≤ 40, and without recent spinal/abdominal surgery or major trauma are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People with inflammatory, neuropathic, or malignant musculoskeletal disease, current smokers, those with lung disease, BMI > 40, recent surgery or trauma, or significant cognitive or mobility impairments are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help target rehabilitation, breathing exercises, and psychological support to reduce disability in people with chronic neck pain.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have suggested links between neck dysfunction, respiratory measures, and psychosocial factors but evidence is limited and mixed, and combining these domains in a single mixed-methods approach is relatively novel.
