What this trial studies
Community management teams in Chengdu will register adults with pathologically confirmed malignancies and screen them using eligibility criteria including a PG-SGA score of 4–9. Eligible patients will be offered a dedicated app for initial nutritional assessment and ongoing nutrition care, with data collected on demographics, tumor type, treatment, and smartphone use. Patients identified at nutritional risk through the app will be referred for face-to-face consultations with the research team's clinical nutritionists and may undergo additional tests such as body composition analysis. The intervention combines remote app-based monitoring and local clinical nutrition follow-up coordinated with West China Hospital.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (≥18) with a pathologically confirmed malignant tumor, PG-SGA score 4–9, expected survival >1 year, and sufficient cognitive and reading ability to use the app and complete questionnaires are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients with severe digestive or metabolic conditions, those in cachexia or refractory cachexia stages, or those with cognitive impairment or CNS metastases (or who cannot use a smartphone) are unlikely to benefit from this app-based approach.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the app could enable earlier detection of nutritional problems and faster access to dietitian-led care, potentially improving nutritional status and tolerance of cancer treatment.
How similar studies have performed: Related digital nutrition programs and community screening efforts have shown promise in improving identification and referral for malnutrition in cancer, but results have been mixed and context-dependent.
