What this trial studies

This study investigates the effects of a walking program with dogs on ventilatory functions and physical intolerance in adolescents suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis. Forty adolescents will be randomly assigned to two groups: one group will receive training with an incentive spirometer, while the other group will also participate in walking with dogs for additional physical activity. Both groups will engage in these activities three times a week for 12 weeks during their dialysis sessions. The goal is to assess whether the combination of these interventions can enhance their quality of life and physical capabilities.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adolescents with end-stage renal disease who are on regular hemodialysis.

Not a fit: Patients with cardiac, respiratory, orthopedic, or liver issues may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve the respiratory function and overall quality of life for adolescents with ESRD.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored physical activity in chronic illness, this specific approach combining incentive spirometry with dog walking is relatively novel.
