What this trial studies
This study aims to implement a centralized, virtually-delivered Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) program in pediatric primary care settings to address adolescent alcohol and other drug (AOD) use. By providing rapid access to this evidence-based intervention, the study seeks to improve early identification and treatment of AOD use and associated mental health issues among adolescents at high risk. The approach leverages behavioral telemedicine to overcome barriers faced by healthcare providers, such as time constraints and lack of trained staff. The effectiveness and cost-efficiency of this virtual modality will be evaluated across multiple pediatric clinics.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adolescents aged 12 to 17 years who are seen for a Well Visit and are at risk of AOD use disorder.
Not a fit: Patients who do not meet the criteria for AOD use risk or are not attending a Well Visit may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve early detection and treatment of AOD use and related mental health issues in adolescents.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that SBIRT can be effective in various settings, but this specific virtual approach is relatively novel.
