Virtual health insurance navigation for young adult cancer survivors
A Randomized Controlled Trial to Improve Health Insurance Literacy and Surveillance Among Young Adult Cancer Survivors

What this trial studies
This randomized controlled trial will enroll 300 young adult cancer survivors to compare a four-session virtual navigation program (CHAT-S) with usual care. The intervention delivers guided health insurance education and navigation remotely to improve insurance knowledge and help survivors access recommended survivorship services. Outcomes will be measured using self-report surveys combined with electronic health records and claims data to capture insurance knowledge, financial burden, and surveillance for recurrence. An economic evaluation including cost-effectiveness and budget impact analyses will examine sustainability and potential system-level value.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 26–45 (preferably 26–39) diagnosed with breast, testicular, lymphoma, sarcoma, or colorectal cancer who completed initial treatment within the past year, are patients at University of Utah/Huntsman or Intermountain Healthcare, and speak English.
Not a fit: People who do not speak English, lack phone or video-capable devices, have developmental delays that prevent participation, live outside the participating health systems, or have cancer types not listed are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could help young survivors better use their insurance, face lower out-of-pocket costs, and be more likely to receive guideline-recommended surveillance.
How similar studies have performed: Pilot implementations of this navigation program and an adapted childhood-survivor version demonstrated feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy, but large randomized evidence is still pending.
