What this trial studies
Researchers will recruit female students aged 18–24 from the Faculty of Health Sciences at KTO Karatay University and randomly assign eligible participants to an experimental or control group. Pre-test measures including a Visual Analog Scale for pain and a menstrual symptoms questionnaire will be collected face-to-face, then the experimental group will receive 24 video-assisted laughter yoga sessions delivered in person, with post-test assessments after the last session. The sample size was calculated to require at least 68 participants to achieve 90% power with an effect size of d=0.8. Exclusion criteria include secondary dysmenorrhea, current oral contraceptive use, compromised abdominal tissue integrity, and any chronic or mental illness.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are female students aged 18–24 at the Faculty of Health Sciences with regular menstrual cycles and primary dysmenorrhea scoring ≥45 mm on the VAS who can attend the scheduled sessions.
Not a fit: Those with secondary causes of dysmenorrhea, current use of oral contraceptives, compromised abdominal tissue, or chronic/mental illnesses are excluded and may not receive benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If effective, this could offer a low-cost, non-drug way to reduce period pain and improve menstrual symptoms for young women.
How similar studies have performed: Small prior studies of laughter therapy and related mind–body interventions have reported reductions in pain and stress, but rigorous evidence specifically for video-assisted laughter yoga in primary dysmenorrhea is limited.
