Preventing Cognitive Decline and Dementia Through an Innovative Immersive Virtual Reality and Telemedicine-based Multi-component Intervention: a Randomized Controlled Trial

NA · I.R.C.C.S. Fondazione Santa Lucia · NCT06429215

What this trial studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of an immersive virtual reality and telemedicine-based multi-component intervention aimed at preventing cognitive decline and dementia in older adults experiencing subjective cognitive decline. Participants will engage in cognitive training and receive education on health and lifestyle through virtual reality sessions. The study employs a randomized, double-blinded controlled design to compare the multi-component intervention against cognitive-only and active control interventions. By focusing on non-pharmacological approaches, the study seeks to identify modifiable lifestyle factors that can mitigate the risk of dementia.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are older adults who perceive a decline in their cognitive abilities compared to five years ago but do not have objective cognitive impairment.

Not a fit: Patients with clinically significant depression, anxiety, or other psychiatric disorders, as well as those with unstable medical conditions, will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using non-pharmacological interventions for cognitive decline, but this specific approach combining virtual reality and telemedicine is relatively novel.
