What this trial studies
This study evaluates the combined effects of simvastatin and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on patients with chronic periodontitis. Simvastatin is known to enhance bone healing and reduce inflammation, while aPDT uses light to activate photosensitizing agents that kill bacteria. The trial aims to determine how these two treatments work together to improve periodontal health. Participants will receive either simvastatin alone or in combination with aPDT, with follow-up visits to assess their progress.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are healthy individuals with chronic periodontitis who have not received any periodontal treatment in the past six months.
Not a fit: Patients who are pregnant, lactating, smokers, or those with systemic diseases or on medications affecting tissue healing may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve treatment outcomes for patients with chronic periodontitis.
How similar studies have performed: While the combination of simvastatin and aPDT is a novel approach, similar studies have shown promise in using these therapies individually for periodontal disease.
