Using Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy to Improve Muscle Strength in Knee Osteoarthritis Patients
The Effectiveness of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy on Muscle Strength and Function in Patients With End-stage of Knee Osteoarthritis Patients: a Randomized Controlled Trial
This study is testing if combining Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy with exercise can help people with severe knee osteoarthritis build muscle strength before they have knee replacement surgery.

What this trial studies
This study investigates the effects of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy combined with exercise on muscle strength and function in patients suffering from end-stage knee osteoarthritis who are awaiting total knee replacement (TKR). Given the long waiting times for surgery in Hong Kong, the study aims to enhance preoperative knee-extensor strength, potentially delaying the need for surgery and improving post-operative outcomes. Participants will undergo PEMF therapy alongside regular exercise training to promote muscle regeneration and alleviate pain. The study is crucial for addressing the significant disability and quality of life issues faced by this aging population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are males and females over 50 years old with end-stage knee osteoarthritis who are scheduled for total knee replacement.
Not a fit: Patients with connective tissue disorders, previous joint replacements, or acute immobility may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve muscle strength and functional ability in patients awaiting knee replacement, enhancing their quality of life.
How similar studies have performed: While PEMF therapy has been explored in other contexts, this specific application for end-stage knee osteoarthritis is relatively novel and untested.
