What this trial studies

This study aims to evaluate the impact of probiotics on oral health, specifically targeting gingivitis and halitosis in young adults aged 17-25. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either probiotics or a placebo for 28 days. The study will measure salivary biomarkers, including cytokine IL-1b and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-8), as well as volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) to assess improvements in gingival health. Statistical analyses will compare the outcomes between the two groups at different intervals.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are healthy males and females aged 17-25 with specific oral health conditions, including mouth breathing habits and orthodontic or prosthodontic appliances.

Not a fit: Patients with chronic or systemic diseases, autoimmune conditions, or those currently on antibiotics will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to effective probiotic treatments for improving gum health and reducing bad breath.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of probiotics for oral health is a growing area of interest, this specific approach targeting gingivitis and halitosis in this demographic is relatively novel.
