Using nutritional scores to predict complications in elderly cardiac surgery patients
Investigation & Comparison of the Effects of Preoperative Nutritional Status Scores to Predict Post-op Pulmonary Complications Among Elderly Patients With Cardiac Surgery

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to evaluate the prognostic value of nutritional status in predicting postoperative pulmonary complications in elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery. It will utilize three different nutritional scoring systems: the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI). By comparing these scores, the study seeks to identify which nutritional assessment is most effective in forecasting complications post-surgery.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are elderly patients aged 60 years and older who are scheduled for elective open heart surgery.
Not a fit: Patients undergoing emergency surgery will not benefit from this study as they do not meet the inclusion criteria.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could help improve patient outcomes by identifying at-risk elderly patients and tailoring preoperative nutritional interventions.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promising results in using nutritional assessments to predict surgical outcomes, suggesting this approach may be effective.
