What this trial studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of pericapsular nerve group and lumbar erector spinae plane blocks as adjuncts to general anesthesia in elderly patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. The goal is to reduce postoperative pain and complications associated with general anesthesia, particularly in older adults who may have complex medical histories. By targeting specific nerves involved in hip joint sensation, the study aims to enhance pain control and facilitate quicker recovery. The interventions include administering bupivacaine in conjunction with general anesthesia to improve overall outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals over 75 years old who are scheduled for total hip arthroplasty under general anesthesia.

Not a fit: Patients with a BMI over 30, allergies to local anesthetics, or significant preexisting health conditions may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce postoperative pain and complications for elderly patients undergoing hip surgery.

How similar studies have performed: Similar studies have shown promise in using nerve blocks for pain management in orthopedic surgeries, indicating potential success for this approach.
