What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates the effects of muscadine wine polyphenols on cognitive performance, memory, and mood in healthy adults over 50 years old. The study aims to determine whether both acute and chronic intake of these polyphenols can improve mental health by regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, reducing inflammation, and alleviating oxidative stress. Participants will be given either muscadine wine polyphenols or a placebo, and their cognitive functions will be assessed throughout the trial. This research seeks to provide the first clinical evidence of the impact of muscadine wine on brain health.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are healthy adults over the age of 50 with a BMI between 18.5 and 29.9.

Not a fit: Patients with clinically diagnosed mental illnesses, cardiovascular or neurological disorders, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to new dietary interventions for improving cognitive health and mental well-being in older adults.

How similar studies have performed: While other studies have shown positive effects of polyphenol-rich foods on cognition and mood, this specific approach using muscadine wine polyphenols is novel and has not been previously tested.
