Using MRI to assess penile cancer before surgery

The Role of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Preoperative Assessment of Primary Penile Carcinoma

Oslo University Hospital · NCT05447273

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) in the preoperative assessment of patients with newly diagnosed penile squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The study will include 60 patients referred to Oslo University Hospital for organ-sparing surgery (OSS), which may enhance quality of life and sexual function. By utilizing mpMRI, the researchers hope to improve patient selection and reduce the risk of local recurrence after surgery. The non-invasive nature of this imaging technique makes it a comfortable option for patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients with newly diagnosed penile squamous cell carcinoma who are suitable for organ-sparing surgery.

Not a fit: Patients who do not have penile squamous cell carcinoma or those who are not candidates for organ-sparing surgery may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to better surgical outcomes and improved quality of life for patients with penile cancer.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of mpMRI in this context is promising, it is not yet widely incorporated into clinical practice, indicating that this approach may be novel.
