What this trial studies
This project aims to implement a community-based approach to reduce hazardous drinking in Mozambique through the use of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) facilitated by mobile health technology. The study involves adapting the mSBIRT app, conducting a cluster-randomized trial, and scaling up the most effective intervention. Community health workers will be trained to deliver these interventions, leveraging existing health programs to ensure sustainability and effectiveness. The goal is to inform policy and improve alcohol use treatment in Mozambique and similar low- and middle-income countries.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are community health workers who are Portuguese speakers and work in the randomized clinics.
Not a fit: Patients who are not community health workers or those who do not speak Portuguese may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce hazardous drinking and improve public health outcomes in Mozambique.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success with similar mobile health interventions for alcohol use reduction, indicating a promising approach.
