Using lung ultrasound to detect lung disease in rheumatoid arthritis patients

Role of Lung Ultrasound in Screening for Interstitial Lung Disease in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis

Observational Assiut University · NCT06531785

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of lung ultrasound as a diagnostic tool for early detection of interstitial lung disease (ILD) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Participants will undergo both lung ultrasound and high-resolution CT scans to compare the accuracy of these methods in identifying ILD. The study focuses on patients with a history of chest issues related to their rheumatoid arthritis, aiming to provide a non-invasive and cost-effective alternative to traditional imaging techniques. By assessing the number of B-lines observed in lung ultrasound, researchers hope to establish a reliable screening method for ILD.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 with a confirmed diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and a clinical suspicion of interstitial lung disease.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of pulmonary neoplasia or other conditions causing interstitial fluid, such as heart failure or asthma, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to earlier and more accessible diagnosis of interstitial lung disease in rheumatoid arthritis patients, improving patient outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown that lung ultrasound can be a sensitive and specific tool for diagnosing interstitial lung disease in connective tissue disease patients, indicating potential success for this approach.
