Using laser therapy to enhance maxillary expansion in children with crossbites

Effect of Rapid Maxillary Expansion with Low Level Laser Therapy Versus Rapid Maxillary Expansion in Children with Posterior Cross Bite

Phase 3 Interventional National Research Centre, Egypt · NCT05586997

What this trial studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of rapid maxillary expansion using a bonded Hyrax expander combined with low level laser therapy compared to rapid maxillary expansion alone. It aims to recruit sixty children aged 7 to 14 years who have posterior crossbites and patent mid-palatal sutures. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups, and their orthodontic records will be collected before and after a 6-month retention period. The study will analyze the skeletal, dentoalveolar, and soft tissue effects of both interventions using advanced imaging techniques.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 7 to 14 years with posterior crossbites and patent mid-palatal sutures.

Not a fit: Patients with poor oral hygiene, active periodontal disease, craniofacial abnormalities, or those who have had previous orthodontic treatment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could improve treatment outcomes for children with posterior crossbites by enhancing tissue regeneration and reducing relapse rates.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of low level laser therapy in orthodontics is gaining interest, this specific combination of techniques is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
