Using infrared thermal imaging to evaluate angioplasty for peripheral artery disease

Infrared Thermal Imaging in Evaluating the Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty for Peripheral Artery Disease

Observational The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University · NCT05941533

What this trial studies

This study evaluates the effectiveness of infrared thermal imaging (IRTI) in assessing blood perfusion in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) after undergoing percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA). It aims to determine the success rate of the angioplasty procedure by monitoring changes in foot blood flow. The study focuses on patients with critical limb ischemia and varying degrees of arterial lesions, using IRTI as a follow-up tool post-surgery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients with Rutherford grades 3 to 6 who require PTA for severe claudication, rest pain, ulceration, or gangrene in one limb.

Not a fit: Patients with acute limb ischemia, those requiring major amputations, or those with indications for open surgery may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide a non-invasive method to assess the effectiveness of angioplasty in improving blood flow for PAD patients.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of infrared thermal imaging in this specific context is novel, similar imaging techniques have shown promise in evaluating vascular conditions in other studies.
