Using high-flow nasal oxygen for preoxygenation in emergency surgery patients with full stomachs

Research on Pre-Anesthetic Blood Oxygenation Effect of High-Flow Nasal Oxygen for Emergency Surgery Patients With Full Stomachs

Not applicable Interventional Vietnam Military Medical University · NCT06879600

What this trial studies

This clinical trial evaluates the effectiveness of high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) therapy for preoxygenation in adult patients undergoing emergency surgery with full stomachs. Participants will be randomly assigned to either receive HFNO or traditional face mask preoxygenation before anesthesia induction. The study aims to assess whether HFNO can improve oxygenation and reduce the risk of hypoxemia during the critical period of intubation. The trial is conducted at a single center, focusing on patients classified as ASA I or II who are at risk of gastric fullness.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adult emergency surgical patients at risk of gastric fullness requiring endotracheal intubation.

Not a fit: Patients with predicted difficult airways, respiratory diseases, or those who cannot achieve a proper mask seal may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could enhance patient safety by reducing the risk of hypoxemia during anesthesia induction in emergency surgeries.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of HFNO in various settings has shown promise, this specific application in emergency surgery patients with full stomachs is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
