What this trial studies

This study investigates the use of intravenous epinephrine to prevent post-intubation collapse in septic patients who are experiencing shock. It is a randomized prospective comparative study conducted in the intensive care units of Ain Shams University Hospitals. The study will enroll 44 patients who meet specific inclusion criteria, including a shock index greater than 0.9, and will randomly assign them to receive either epinephrine or isotonic fluid. The goal is to assess the effectiveness of epinephrine in maintaining hemodynamic stability after emergency intubation.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are septic patients over 18 years old who require emergent intubation and have a shock index greater than 0.9.

Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit from this study include those under 18, pregnant individuals, and those with contraindications to epinephrine or a shock index below 0.9.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce the risk of post-intubation hypotension and improve outcomes for critically ill patients.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of push-dose pressors is common, this specific application of epinephrine for preventing post-intubation complications in septic patients is relatively novel.
