What this trial studies

This clinical trial evaluates the effectiveness of intracanal cryotherapy using cold saline to alleviate post-operative pain in patients undergoing root canal treatment for symptomatic apical periodontitis. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a control group receiving room temperature saline or a cold group receiving saline at 2.5°C during the final irrigation phase of the procedure. Pain levels will be assessed using a visual analogue scale before and after treatment. The study aims to determine if the temperature of the irrigation solution can significantly impact pain management in dental procedures.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include systemically healthy patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis and symptomatic apical periodontitis who report a pre-treatment pain score of less than 8.

Not a fit: Patients who are on preoperative analgesics or antibiotics, have calcified canals, or are pregnant may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to improved pain management strategies for patients undergoing root canal treatments.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on the specific use of cryotherapy in this context, similar studies exploring temperature effects on pain management have shown promising results.
