What this trial studies
This trial aims to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of chewing gum as a behavioral intervention for smoking cessation. Participants will receive brief smoking cessation advice and either chew gum or attempt to quit without assistance for one week. The study will compare the reduction in cigarette consumption and smoking cessation outcomes between the two groups, as well as assess the impact on oral health. The goal is to determine if chewing gum can be a viable aid in reducing smoking habits.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are Hong Kong residents aged 18 or older who smoke at least one cigarette per day and are willing to use chewing gum.
Not a fit: Patients who have communication barriers or are currently enrolled in other smoking cessation programs may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide a simple and accessible method for individuals to reduce cigarette consumption and achieve smoking cessation.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of chewing gum for smoking cessation is a common concept, this specific approach is being evaluated for its feasibility and effectiveness, making it a novel assessment.
